parents that are concerned about their children using the Internet. There are

introductory info about safety issues on the web.

Search engines and safety

Search engines are a highly valuable tool that can enable your kids to find
useful and fun web sites and educational info. However, search engines can also
be an efficient gateway to porn, violence and hate content (or even just
unwanted commercial or misleading content). Please see our section on “How to
search the Net” for effective tips and tutorials useful for both adults and
children.

The online community understands the importance of child-safe search engines.

Use kids’ search engines and directories

Aside from major search engines, you can use specialized kids’ engines. These
engines or directories lead only to child-safe material by analyzing keywords,
URLs (web addresses) and using content rating systems (read more about in “Safe
searching – Browsers”)

Our Search Engine Listings section features a category of kids’ search engines.
Beware, search engines may eventually lead to inappropriate information.

The 3rd Level Rule of Degradation: Let’s say your kids are surfing on a standard
browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer without parental controls on. You
get junior started on a Kids’ search engines and then leave the room thinking
it’s all good. You can probably feel very comfortable about the links provided
on Kids’ search engines. You can hopefully feel comfortable about links given on
the sites generated in the search results. But now you have arrived at the 3rd
level of degradation. The safety factor could deteriorate fast. Links from 3rd
level web sites may lead to inappropriate content. Therefore, use of additional
tools or supervision is recommended.

They’ll be OK

With the help of advanced tools, search engines and browser controls, your kids
should be safe on the web. Try to supervise your children whenever possible.
Educate them about online safety – and they’ll be OK (well…of course depending
on the age and maturity level of your individual children).

Content

A search engine’s content is its database of web sites — the information assembled by its spider program. Each search engine has its own style and technology that sets it apart. Elements that vary from search engine to search engine include:

The spider

Because every spider is programmed to search for and retrieve sites in its own particular way, each search engine has its own unique database.

The database

How is the database cleaned up and filtered? The frequency with which sites are spidered affects the database’s freshness. When a database is updated frequently it will contain a minimum of “dead” links.

The formula

Different search engines employ different search retrieval formulas, or algorithms, to provide relevant content in response to a user’s query.

Features and functionality

The various search engines have different bells and whistles to appeal to searchers’ different experience levels or individual tastes.

The look

Engines’ graphical user interfaces vary, as do the format in which they present their results. In many cases search engines consider the details of how their databases are constructed and maintained to be proprietary information. This information is seldom completely available through their Help or FAQ screens. You can begin to get a “feel” for the type of information an engine gives you by using it regularly.

Ways you can search

The Internet is the most rapidly growing collection of resources in human history. Fortunately, most search engines now offer ways to narrow your searches to produce fewer and more focused results. Learning how to use advanced search options effectively can save you hours of frustration. While many search engines offer some or all of the following enhancements, they are not all activated or expressed in the same way.

Check the Help, FAQ or “Advanced Search” areas of a search engine for details on what enhancements it offers and how to activate them.
