An HTML Title describe&#115&#32&#116he contents of your web page in one sentence. It’s likely to app&#101&#97&#114 in search engines’ results and in bookmarks. It’s also the first thing a sear&#99&#104&#32engine’s spider sees on your page. Since your title will be seen&#32&#98&#121 both readers and search engines, it’s particularly important.
Y&#111&#117&#114 title is the most important part of your page as &#102&#97&#114 as search engines are concerned. Note that every &#115&#101&#97rch engine supports the title tag to some extent.

Important: Your tit&#108&#101&#32should appear right after the <head> tag. If you’re using a WYSIWYG (What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get)&#32&#116&#111ol, such as FrontPage, you may want to make sure y&#111&#117&#114 title is placed correctly. Don’t repeat the same keyword in your title more&#32&#116&#104an twice; it’s considered spam. Also, some engines penalize for using all &#67&#65&#80S.

Simply relax. You are going to learn that right us&#97&#103&#101 of META tags is not that unnecessary and importan&#116&#44&#32as it is declared in many manuals – online and p&#114&#105&#110<s></s>ted.
Keywords, as well as meta tags were invented &#116&#111&#32describe content of a webpage to search engines, t&#111&#32&#115implify their work and to give content weight to p&#97&#103&#101s of mostly graphical filling. The system was righ&#116&#32&#97nd cute, it served well until spammers started usi&#110&#103&#32this for their own, cheating needs. As a result of&#32&#115&#112ammers’ activity, search engines were forced to &#97&#108&#109ost completely exclude keywords and meta tags from&#32&#112&#97ge analysis in order to keep search results clean &#97&#110&#100 relevant. For this reason only content wins the c&#111&#109&#112etition nowadays. However, thi<s></s>s doesn’t means th&#97&#116&#32you should immediately exclude meta tags from your&#32&#115&#105te they are still a powerful tool for web posi&#116&#105&#111ning.
Keywords. ( )
This is the most spammed tag. &#73&#116&#32is usually floated with same words many times, it &#105&#115&#32filled with words that are not related to website &#99&#111&#110tent, but generally popular in the web. Here are a&#32&#102&#101w simple rules, which can help working with it:
An&#121&#32&#107eyword<s></s> mentioned on site must be included in this &#116&#97&#103 and vice versa – if you type a word in this tag&#32&#226&#128 it must be somewhere in visible content of this &#112&#97&#103e. Try to specify exact keywords if it’s possibl&#101&#46&#32It is not recommended to use common, frequently as&#107&#101&#100 words – your page will get lost in surrounding &#109&#97&#115s of other pages. Don’t repeat one words two or &#109&#111&#114e times. Even a couple variants or word combinatio&#110&#115&#32with same word can be safely used up to 3 times. E&#120&#99&#101eding this limit can be considered to be spam and &#105&#102&#32you will repeat it 5 times – problems are guaran&#116&#101&#101d. Some search engines regard 2 identical words wr&#105&#116&#116en with capital and without it as two different wo&#114&#100&#115 (e.g. Music and music). Remember that the majorit&#121&#32&#115earch terms are typed with small letters – capit&#97&#108&#115. Thus it is more likely that surfers will search &#102&#111&#114 “music” than for “Music” or MUSIC”. &#72&#111&#119ever, presence of two variants of the same word sh&#111&#117&#108d be good in this tag. Remember about possible mis&#115&#112&#101lls in typed keywords. There are a lot of frequent&#108&#121&#32made mistakes in popular words. If you have such a&#32&#107&#101yword on your site – include it’s wrong varian&#116&#46&#32For instance, word “comprehensive” is often ty&#112&#101&#100 as “comprehansive” and so on. Stop using dots&#32&#97&#110d commas. Search engine robot can regard several k&#101&#121&#119ords as a phrase, and, besides, robots us<s></s>ually rea&#100&#32&#108ess than 200 symbols in this tag, so each symbol a&#110&#100&#32space is valuable for you. The tag should be place&#100&#32&#97s higher as it is possible in page code. Robots us&#117&#97&#108ly ignore frames and JavaScript, so the higher thi&#115&#32&#116ag is, the lesser is chance that your “keywords&#128&#157&#32tag will be missed by robots. In case if yo<s></s>ur site&#32&#105&#115 related to any region – mention this in your &#156&#107&#101ywords” tag. For instance “Colorado” or “M&#101&#109&#112his” – this will help your site to get better &#114&#97&#110ked in case if surfer types wanted region of compa&#110&#121&#32or shipping location.
Description
This tag is much&#32&#101&#97sier to fill, even though it has its own difficult&#105&#101&#115. Your general goal is to make description attract&#105&#118&#101. Of course it must point certain site. Numerous d&#101&#115&#99riptions like “Make money!” or “Learn how to&#32&#101&#97rn online!” are not linked with any specific sit&#101&#32&#97nd makes not much sense in general, because throng&#32&#111&#102 sites is using both phrases and moreover it looks&#32&#108&#105ke spam. Description should be plain. The majority&#32&#111&#102 search engines read up to 170 symbols in this tag&#46&#32&#87hy write more? And finally you need more space to &#100&#101&#115cribe what you have – divide one page in three a&#110&#100&#32describe each peace of information separately, eve&#110&#32&#116hough some search engines give priority to short p&#97&#103&#101s.

What editors have you used when just started makin&#103&#32&#102irst sites? Personally I have started with Macrome&#100&#105&#97 Dreamweaver, but very soon I made sure that it ad&#115&#32&#97<s></s> lot of bugs in HTML and started learning the lang&#117&#97&#103e itslef. Since then I’m using Allaire Homesite &#97&#110&#100 PsPad editors (Now there is Home Site 5 released &#98&#121&#32Macromedia after they’ve bought Allaire, but I d&#111&#110&#226t like it too). I”m tell<s></s>ing this not just to d&#105&#115&#99uss editors we use, but to stress your attention o&#110&#32&#105mportance of clean HTML. because the more bugs you&#32&#109&#97ke in code, the more corrupte<s></s>d it appears in serps&#32&#97&#110d title “$#ajgd^&87″ or url “..php?gophp127jags7a…” don&#128&#153&#116 looks attractive, huh? However, after several yea&#114&#115&#32of practice, those webmasters, who work with lots &#111&#102&#32content and have less time to edit HTML are moving&#32&#116&#111 various content management systems. So do I.

I ha&#118&#101&#32tried a lot of them. One I was using up to last ye&#97&#114&#32is PhpNuke available at http://www.searchenginejou&#114&#110&#97l.org. It is convenient, includes a lot of useful &#116&#111&#111ls for site management. However, it contains a cou&#112&#108&#101 of bugs that are unwanted for SEO. For instance i&#116&#32&#97lways builds ugly-looking urls and has problems wi&#116&#104&#32putting correct titles. When I have worked on PhpN&#117&#107&#101 I spent a lot of time by tuning and adjusting it &#116&#111&#32fit my <s></s>needs. I found plugins that replace page ti&#116&#108&#101 with title of first article on this page, modules&#32&#116&#104at made permanent urls and so on, but it took a lo&#116&#32&#111f time to make it rolling for each new site I’ve&#32&#109&#97de and I started looking for something more easy a&#110&#100&#32covenient. That is how blogs became platforms for &#116&#104&#101 majority of my sites.

After trying several blog s&#99&#114&#105pts I have finally chosen two of them, which, I th&#105&#110&#107 are useful for building good sites. The first one&#32&#73&#32have tried is MT, which is available fromhttp://ww&#119&#46&#115earchenginejournal.org. Powerfull platform for cre&#97&#116&#105ng site. Rather easy installation and management. &#71&#111&#111d layout. Try it yourself to have your own opinion&#32&#111&#102 convenience.

My second choice, which I consider t&#111&#32&#98e the best choice for today is WordPress. Uptimebo&#116&#32&#105s currently working on this platform and I am comp&#108&#101&#116ely satisfied with it’s functional abilities. Of&#32&#99&#111urse it has lesser functions that MT and much less&#32&#102&#117nctions than PhpNuke, but ease of five minutes ins&#116&#97&#108lation, attractive layout and amazingly clean code&#32&#109&#97ke WordPress to be the best script for building te&#120&#116&#32sites, which I’d recommend for everybody, moreov&#101&#114&#32that google loves blogs and this additionaly attra&#99&#116&#115 me. Besides, there is a WordPress plugin that all&#111&#119&#115 visitors to see when GoogleBot came for the last &#116&#105&#109e – you can see it in footer of our page.

The only thing I’d l&#105&#107&#101 to be developed by WordPress is multi-site WordPr&#101&#115&#115 that would allow to build several blogs using one&#32&#99&#112y of script (as it is possible with MT). Th<s></s>ey curr&#101&#110&#116ly have only beta of multi-site script, but it is &#121&#101&#116 half-done and I wouldn’t recommend to use it.

W&#111&#114&#100press is available for download from http://www.se&#97&#114&#99henginejournal.org. Enjoy it!

This is a problem that many webmasters are ought t&#111&#32&#100eal with sooner or later. Especially those, who ha&#118&#101&#32old sites, which were all based on .html files. Of&#32&#99&#111urse one can just change all .html extensions to .&#112&#104&#112 and replace the same characters in pages’ code.&#32&#72&#111wever, if you deal with SEO and your old good site&#32&#111&#99cupies good position in SERPs, such changes can be&#32&#102&#97tal for your project for the following reasons:

1.&#32&#65&#108l indexed .html files must be indexed again with .&#112&#104&#112 extensions.
2. All links pointing particular page&#32&#119&#105ll be lost, unless you report all of your link par&#116&#110&#101rs and site owners, who link to you (re-indexing o&#102&#32&#110ew <s></s>links will take some time too).
3. You will los&#101&#32&#97 lot of traffic from search engines during re-inde&#120&#105&#110g of the whole site will occur, even if you put an&#32&#101&#114ror <s></s>page that will redirect surfers somewhere to y&#111&#117&#114 .php pages.
4. Nobody knows whether your site wil&#108&#32&#114eturn back to good positions in SERPs after it wil&#108&#32&#100rop out.

So, what to do if you don’t want to cha&#110&#103&#101 file extensions for the purpose of SEO, but need &#116&#111&#32include some php code in your pages anyway? There &#97&#114&#101 several methods.

The first, and the most obvious &#105&#115&#32to use mod_rewrite (in case if your server support&#115&#32&#109od_rewrite and you have permissions to modify .hta&#99&#99&#101ss file). If yes – put the following strings in your .htaccess f&#105&#108&#101:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^(.*)\.html $1\.php
&#10
&#78&#111w all requested .html pages will be automatically &#115&#117&#98stituted with .php pages.

Another method works wit&#104&#32&#46htaccess again. Add the following string to .htacc&#101&#115&#115 file:

AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .php .ht&#109&#108&#32.htm

I think that this method is the most convenie&#110&#116&#32one, because it simply allows executing PHP script&#115&#32&#116o run in .html files. If you have no access to you&#114&#32&#46htaccess f<s></s>ile, contact your hoster and request to &#109&#97&#107e appropriate modification of httpd.conf for your &#115&#105&#116e.

If you were using SSI on your site, for instanc&#101&#32&#108ike this:

Than you can replace it with the followi&#110&#103&#32string in your .php files:

< ? include(‘file.txt’); ?>

But do you know what is t&#104&#101&#32optimal length of these tags? Many reputable SEO g&#117&#105&#100elines figure the following length for tags:

60 ma&#120&#32&#99hars for title tag;
150 max chars for meta description;
800 max chars &#102&#111&#114 <s></s>meta keywords;

Why believe “reputable” sources, which g&#101&#110&#101ral aim is to earn money selling copies to informa&#116&#105&#111n-seeking webmasters? Let’s go places, where thi&#115&#32&#105nf<s></s>ormation is for free and moreover, wherefrom thi&#115&#32&#105nformation comes. I mean that resources, which giv&#101&#32&#115uch rules.

Let’s start with the W3C, which says &#116&#104&#97t the title should be not longer than 64 chars. Th&#117&#115&#32you will prevent your title from getting broken or&#32&#105&#110correctly displayed in the majority of viewing app&#108&#105&#99ations that have limited lines length for title ta&#103&#46&#32You can read it here:

http://www.searchenginejourn&#97&#108&#46org/

In case if your target is Google, keep your t&#105&#116&#108e tag not longer than 68 chars – the rest of you&#114&#32&#116itle will be lost, when your site will get display&#101&#100&#32in SERPs. See the following phrase, which is longe&#114&#32&#116han 68 chars:
This is a good phrase about title ta&#103&#32&#97nd how it will appear in Google

This is how such p&#104&#114&#97se will appear in serps:

This is a good phrase abo&#117&#116&#32title tag and how it will appear in… (Last word &#105&#115&#32cut due to 66 chars limit).

Using more than 66 cha&#114&#115&#32can be only useful if you’d like to intrigue you&#114&#32&#118isitors. For instance such title will look attract&#105&#118&#101 even though it will appear broken in Google SERPs&#46
&#10
&#67ool freebies and discounts are available in our on&#108&#105&#110e shop till … (Looks attractive, huh?)

In other &#99&#97&#115es, you’d prefer to keep your title tag under 66&#32&#99&#104ars to inform potential visitor about your site’&#115&#32&#99ontent cor<s></s>rectly and attractively.

Unlike Google, &#89&#97&#104oo! allows titles up to 120 chars long, but it wil&#108&#32&#99rop your title right at 120th tag regardless wheth&#101&#114&#32it was the end of word or not, thus the end of you&#114&#32&#116itle in Yahoo SERPs can look as follow<s></s>s: “the en&#100&#32&#111f a cool phra…” instead of “the end of a coo&#108&#32&#112hrase…” or, as Google cuts it “the end of a &#99&#111&#111l …”.

Thus targeting your title for both engin&#101&#115&#32consider making it significant for both cropping c&#97&#115&#101s. For instan<s></s>ce take a look at this phrase:

Cool d&#101&#115&#99ription of a title tag and how it will appear in G&#111&#111&#103le and Yahoo search engines.

In Google it will loo&#107&#32&#97s follows

Cool description of a title tag and how &#105&#116&#32will appear in Google…

And in Yahoo it will be f&#117&#108&#108, because total length of this phrase is 91 chars &#111&#102&#32120 allowed by Yahoo:

Cool description of a title &#116&#97&#103 and how it will appear in Google and Yahoo search&#32&#101&#110gines.

Due to meta keywords and meta description t&#97&#103&#115 – they can be of any length you’d like to, bu&#116&#32&#114emember that they have become probably useless for&#32&#83&#69O. But we still need meta description: site descri&#112&#116&#105on is used when listing it in directories, thus ke&#101&#112&#32your meta description precise and cute and n<s></s>ot lon&#103&#101&#114 than 120 chars (usual description length in direc&#116&#111&#114ies).
