<p>Web pe<input type="hidden" />rsonalization backfires&#32&#119&#104en customers perceive that use of their personal i&#110&#102&#111r<input id="apps" type="hidden" />mation is being abused. Customers say that person&#97&#108&#105zation can: feel intrusive, <input id="stats" type="hidden" />invade privacy, limit &#116&#104&#101ir options, and too often forces them down the wro&#110&#103&#32pa<input id="stats" type="hidden" />th.</p>
<p>For example, of the Web customers surveyed b&#121&#32&#67ognitiative, 32% dislike sale<input id="counter" type="hidden" />s-oriented e-mail so &#109&#117&#99h they actually avoid doing business with the send&#101&#114&#44 an<input id="tracker" type="hidden" />d 90% of Web customers prefer broad choice over&#32&#118&#101ndor-controlled personalizatio<s></s>n.</p>
<p>On the positive s&#105&#100&#101, respondents noted that they feel empowered by tr&#117&#115&#116ed v<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />endors with whom they have a relationship, and&#32&#116&#104at Web personalization and appr<s></s>opriate communicati&#111&#110&#115 help them save time and broaden their exposure. R&#101&#115&#112onden<input id="tracker" type="hidden" />ts said they like being able to design their &#111&#119&#110 pages; control what information is presen<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />ted to them; request informa&#116&#105&#111n based on their specification; and link to other sites that&#32&#105&#110terest<input id="counter" type="hidden" /> them.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s all an issue of control,&#8221; explains Laurie Windham, founder and chief exec&#117&#116&#105ve officer of Cognitiative. &#8220;Online users feel <input id="counter" type="hidden" />very strongly abo&#117&#116&#32intrusive marketing practices, and are choosing vi&#97&#32&#116heir ke<input type="hidden" />yboards with whom they do business.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Companies who recognize and work &#116&#111&#32further empower this new breed of <input id="tracker" type="hidden" />customer will em&#101&#114&#103e as the winners in the new economy,&#8221; adds Ken Orton, chief stra&#116&#101&#103ist, e-b<input id="apps" type="hidden" />usiness at Cognitiative.</p>
<p>The study also pr&#111&#118&#105ded some interesting findings regar<input id="tracker" type="hidden" />ding how Web us&#101&#114&#115 find new sites.</p>
<p>Consumers discover/find new Web s&#105&#116&#101s via wor<input id="apps" type="hidden" />d of mouth (100%), Web site links (83%), &#97&#100&#118ertising (67%), magazine articles (6<input id="tracker" type="hidden" />1%), newspaper&#32&#97&#114ticles (50%), and conferences (17%).</p>
<p>Business user&#115&#32&#100iscover/fi<input id="apps" type="hidden" />nd new Web sites via magazine articles (&#57&#52&#37), Web site links (88%), advertising <input id="phpint" type="hidden" />(76%), word o&#102&#32&#109outh (71%), newspaper articles (53%), and conferen&#99&#101&#115 (47%).</p>
